According to the report from Agency-France Press (www.afp.fr), Gurria, secretary-general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), expressed in his working visit to Beijing presently on Mar.25, that he wished China to participate more in activities of the OECD and enter the organization, which though had not listed in the OECD’s timetable.
He said the OECD had a very, very close tie with China, and without China, it could not exert influential and relevant functions to the global development.
He added in the press conference that this was up to China. It would be excellent if China had the intention to be a member of the OECD.
He indicated the ministerial conference of the OECD board of directors held in May, 2007 had decided to “conduct closer cooperation” with China, as well as Brazil, South Africa, India and Indonesia. The OECD has begun accession talks with Russia, Chile, Slovenia, Estonia and Israel, which would enter the OECD in the near future. Other non-members have not shown special interest in the entry.
Gurria expressed in Beijing that he hoped to have a more structured and organized cooperation with China and expected China to engage more in activities launched by the OECD.
